Jewish Week Leipzig

Review

We look back with gratitude on Jewish Week and the time leading up to it with Avishay and Chava Golz. After three difficult years, their time in Döben, Grimma, Leipzig, and Italy felt like a dream, and they thoroughly enjoyed it—as did we and our friends! Thank you, Lord Jesus! Attendance at the events we organized varied, but the discussions were always lively, and the participants were visibly moved. Our flute ensemble helped organize the reading in Grimma. In Leipzig, a number of interested individuals from the visitor program for former Leipzig Jews were able to attend thanks to the van transfer arranged by Kerstin Kluge. The lecture at the Grassi Museum, “From Saxony to Bombay—Jewish Exile in India,” was particularly interesting. Following the screenings in Grimma and Leipzig of “ÜberLeben—Three Jewish Generations,” Avishay and Maria took questions from the audience. We had the privilege of attending the welcome evening, the encounter in Café Makom and the farewell evening of the visit program. Unfortunately, none of the Shoah survivors were able to make the trip, but their descendants—some as young as great-grandchildren—joined us from Israel, the U.S., Brazil, Serbia, and Great Britain. A special highlight for Avishay and Chava was the small surprise celebration for their 51st wedding anniversary in the pavilion garden at Döben, attended by the von Belows and many friends. In addition, his cousin Michael Triebwasser traveled all the way from England just to meet them.

This year, Jewish Week in Leipzig is taking place as part of the Year of Jewish Culture in Saxony, ‘Tacheles’ 2026. At the same time, the visitor programme for former Leipzig Jews and their descendants is also running. We at Tor nach Zion e.V. are organising the following events
