Team Fountain of Tears with leaders in Oswiecim
From August 27 to 30, Maria Hoffman and Dorothea von Below were with me and leaders at “Fountain of Tears” in Birkenau, visited the house of prayer of Mark and Cathy Warwick, the Jewish quarter in Krakow and the concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Important for us were times of common prayer with the celebration of Holy Communion. Fountain of Tears shows the deep identification of Jesus with the suffering of the Jewish people in the Shoah. The House of Prayer focuses on the fact that God creates life from the dead and will transform Auschwitz from a place of death and shame into a place of life. Auschwitz is a lasting warning about the depths of evil that we humans are capable of. It is also shocking that Jews called the place Ospizim (hospitality) because Poles and Jews lived together very well here until the Nazis invaded.
There will be more trips with youth groups in the future. It is important to us to work together with more Polish Christians like Dorota on the “Fountain of Tears”.
